6 Best things to do in the Magical City of Colombo – Discovering the Kaleidoscopic City

Although quite vociferous, Colombo has a number of unique activities to occupy the curious tourist. Without wasting any time, let's dive into the best ways to experience the city's culture.

1

Visit a temple

Although the economic development has taken over Colombo in the form of massive buildings and opulent Colombo hotels such as the likes of Cinnamon Grand, the city still does have tiny pockets that hide glimpses of the country's religious past. Some of the most noteworthy examples are the Gangaramaya Temple and the Bellanwila Temple. Accessible to the public, these sacred locations allow one to discover the rich history of the country. While at the Gangaramaya Temple, do not forget to visit the tiny museum inside the premises that house eye-catching sculptures and other interesting artefacts.

2

Take a ride on a tuk

Tuks are the most common form of transport in the country. While not the safest mode of transport around, they do provide a unique experience and is the easiest way to beat Colombo's notorious traffic. Flagging down a tuk is of no difficulty, However, make sure to flag down a metered tuk. If you can not find a metered tuk, negotiate a fair price before embarking on your journey.

3

Drop by to the beach

Sri Lanka's beaches are a stuff of legend. While the beaches bordering the capital do not come close to the beaches along the southern coastline, they are still worth a visit. Your options at hand are the Mount Lavinia Beach or the urban park that is Galle Face Green. Both tend to be pretty vibrant and are flooded by the city's dwellers, especially when it comes to the weekends. The Mount Lavinia beach is the stage for a number of pulsating parties on the weekends, so if you are in the mood for something similar, be sure to drop by.

4

Go shopping

A decade back, shopping in Sri Lanka meant visiting the capital's only three major malls. However, the situation is much different now, thankfully. A number of famous and well known fashion brands have opened shop while new shopping arcades like Dutch Hospital, Racecourse and Arcade Independence have helped provide central locations to shoppers.

5

Head to the museum

The Colombo Museum is located in a grand vintage building that is by itself enough of a reason to visit the museum. Holding some of the most historically important artefacts of the country such as the crown and throne of the last king of Sri Lanka, the city is also home to a number of art galleries that showcase the best of local art. If time permits, a visit here is highly recommended.

6

Try out street food

Street food is a definite must try while in the country. If you are around Galle Face Green, make sure to try out the famous "isso wade" that roadside hawkers sell. There is also a number of other noteworthy establishments such as Pilawoos that are known for their high quality street food.
