Useful sites for accessing and downloading spatial data for use in geographic information software.
DIVA-GIS is a free computer program for mapping and geographic data analysis (a geographic information system (GIS). With DIVA-GIS you can make maps of the world, or of a very small area, using, for example, state boundaries, rivers, a satellite image, and the locations of sites where an animal species was observed. We also provide free spatial data for the whole world that you can use in DIVA-GIS or other programs.
Our data and tools are the digital information in a format suitable for direct input to software that can analyze its meaning in the scientific, engineering, or business context for which the data were collected.

If you need shapefiles for your GIS applications or processes,
look no further. Geofabrik produces shapefiles of all kinds.
A number of simple shapefiles are available for free on our download server
at http://download.geofabrik.de.
This download site offers a database dump of the OpenStreetMap Full Planet in Protocolbuffer Binary Format.
Also available are extracts of more than 200 cities and regions world wide in different formats.
The CGIAR-CSI GeoPortal is able to provide SRTM 90m Digital Elevation Data for the entire world. The SRTM digital elevation data, produced by NASA originally, is a major breakthrough in digital mapping of the world, and provides a major advance in the accessibility of high quality elevation data for large portions of the tropics and other areas of the developing world. The SRTM digital elevation data provided on this site has been processed to fill data voids, and to facilitate it's ease of use by a wide group of potential users. This data is provided in an effort to promote the use of geospatial science and applications for sustainable development and resource conservation in the developing world. Digital elevation models (DEM) for the entire globe, covering all of the countries of the world, are available for download on this site. The SRTM 90m DEM's have a resolution of 90m at the equator, and are provided in mosaiced 5 deg x 5 deg tiles for easy download and use. All are produced from a seamless dataset to allow easy mosaicing. These are available in both ArcInfo ASCII and GeoTiff format to facilitate their ease of use in a variety of image processing and GIS applications. Data can be downloaded using a browser or accessed directly from the ftp site. If you find this digital elevation data useful, please let us know at

Marine and airborne magnetic anomaly data have been collected for more
than half a century, providing global coverage of the Earth.
Due to the changing main field from the Earth's core, and due to
differences in quality and coverage, combining these data to a
consistent global magnetic grid is challenging. The World Digital
Magnetic Anomaly Map (WDMAM) project is an international effort
to integrate all available near-surface and satellite magnetic anomaly data.
Teams of researchers were invited by IAGA and
CWGM to produce candidate maps
using a common pool of data sets.
Following a scientific review of the candidate submissions, NGDC's grid (now called EMAG3)
was chosen as a base grid for the WDMAM project.

We provide science about the natural hazards that threaten lives and livelihoods; the water, energy, minerals, and other natural resources we rely on; the health of our ecosystems and environment; and the impacts of climate and land-use change. Our scientists develop new methods and tools to supply timely, relevant, and useful information about the Earth and its processes.

GeoBolivia 2.0: la Infraestructura de Datos Espaciales del Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia
|couper{150}|textebrut)This is a shape file of the entire country of Bolivia, delineating municipal boundaries. Other information includes, per municipality, population of women, men, and total number of households. The data is current from the 2000 census.
The automated product: This map may incorporate 250 m spatial resolution MODIS Rapid Response Subset data: provided by NASA's LANCE System. It most commonly incorporates data from from an automated MODIS flood processor using LANCE reflectance data. See appropriate Surface Water Record display for more information and technical description. *Once automation is implemented, the display updates daily using a composite 14-day MODIS NRT product incorporating today's data and 13 days prior. This provides the needed spatial coverage in many areas. In very cloudy regions, however, even the 14 day accumulation period may not suffice to provide complete coverage.
Categorised list of freely available GIS datasets. Includes everything from administrative boundaries to population, and from terrorist incidents to global vegetation at the last glacial maximum.
This page lists GIS data published by governments in other countries.
