Maldives Holiday Checklist - Tick these unforgettable experiences off on your next trip

The Maldives is a picture postcard country with so much to offer travellers in terms of relaxation and entertainment! Here are a few things you MUST try in the Maldives to make the most of your trip.

1

Snorkelling

The Maldives is celebrated as a top snorkelling destination in the world and with good reason. The clear warm waters that surround the islands are rich with marine life, aquatic plants and vast coral reefs. It is estimated that there are over 70 species of corals that make up the reefs, and around 700 species of fish and other marine life found living among the corals. Rare species like the beautiful, giant Napoleon Wrasse, Groupers and Snappers are common sights near lagoons, while further from the reefs you can expect to spot sharks and even turtles. Manta rays are abundant here and can be seen gracefully gliding through the waters in large groups. The best part of all is that you don't need prior experience to snorkel here, its one of the easiest ways to explore the reefs without much gear to weigh you down.

2

Dolphin watching

The Maldives is home to over 20 species of dolphins that can be found swimming in the lagoons and off the coast of several islands. The clear waters and sunny weather make the cruise a wonderful experience, and spotting dolphins much easier than in other countries. Keep an eye for Bottlenose Dolphins, Risso's Dolphins and Spinner Dolphins along with the lesser-known Spotted Uninhabited Island Dolphins.Tour operators are readily available on all the main islands, and can also be booked through some of the best hotels in Maldives.

3

Explore Malé

Malé is the largest city in the Maldives and the best place to soak up local culture. Visitors should ideally allocate a full day to exploring the city's various outdoor markets, fascinating museums, and arts and crafts stores. In addition, there's a 16th-century mosque that is built entirely out of dried coral blocks that's definitely worth seeing.

4

Diving

If there's one place on earth you need to try scuba diving, it's the Maldives! There are several PADI dive centres where you can learn the basics and get a diving certification, plus, most resort chains like Aitken Spence Hotels offer diving excursions and packages to guests. The crystal clear blue waters in the Maldives provide incredible visibility for spotting shipwrecks. Night dives are another great option if you want to experience a different side of the reefs.

5

Indulge in a spa treatment

Maldivian spas are highly sought after as the ultimate spa getaways with their use of traditional healing methods and techniques that incorporate local produce like pressed virgin coconut oil and organic seaweed wraps to treat several ailments. In addition, the famous Maldivian sand massage is ideal for treating aches and pains. Spas can vary throughout the islands, but travellers are guaranteed a relaxing experience no matter where they go.
