Electronic toll collection (ETC) system, the flagship initiative of MoR TH, has been implemented on a pan-India basis in order to remove bottlenecks and ensure collection of Toll fee as per the notified rates. The National Highways in India are carrying 40 % of overall trade, although they constitute only 1.7% of the road network in the country. Apart from the trade, the National Highways are connecting States in an unparallel way. In the words of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, “An efficient network of roads is essential to take development to every nook and corner of the country, just like a network of veins is essential to take blood to all parts of the body”. Such is the importance of the National Highways for India.
