Top 5 Adventure Activities in Sri Lanka – How daring are you?

The island of Sri Lanka is packed with a plethora of things to do; whether on land or sea. Pack your "adventure pants" and get ready to have a memorable, thrilling holiday.

1

Surfing

The towering waves of the Indian Ocean that rumble across the ocean before finally kissing the golden shores of the island attract tourists from across the globe. Popular amongst locals in the area as well, surfing is a fun and thrilling water sport to be experienced, whether you're a beginner or a pro at breaking through waves! However, based on your experience level, there are different beach destinations that will suit you. The iconic Arugam Bay, Trincomalee and Hikkaduwa are cluttered with surfing enthusiasts as they catch the biggest waves around the island. If you're new to the sport, but would still love to learn, head over to Weligama Bay, as the sea is much shallower, and calmer compared to most other beaches around Sri Lanka, mainly due to it being a bay. There are numerous surf schools and board rentals bordering the shores for those eager to learn surfers, after one class, you're guaranteed to be able to surf! So, grab your boards and get ready to go go go!

2

Whitewater rafting

From the rough, playful waves to thrilling and energetic rapids of a river, hop aboard an inflatable boat as you zig zag through boulders and dart across the intrepid waters of the Kalu Ganga. A common sport for adrenaline junkies, white water rafting is for thrill seekers only! The town of Kithulgala is the most favourite and famous spot for rafting enthusiasts. There are quite a few rafting providers you can pick from. Most of the white-water rafting providers offer you a range of fun activities besides just rafting, such as sliding down mini waterfalls, confidence jumps which include cannonballing into a 6 feet natural pool and even a fun trekking excursion.

3

Spicy food

Locals or those who are used to eating spicy food might laugh. However, foreigners of distant lands, beware. Having a meal doused with the island's richest dose of spices and herbs is an adventure and deserves a spot on this list! Whether you're staying at one of the many luxury apartments in Sri Lanka, especially those located in the city such as Cinnamon Life Colombo, step out and head over to the nearest street-food restaurant, and order a kottu. Kottus is a delectable combination of chopped up rotti, vegetables, meat and spice! It doesn't get more adventurous than diving right into a plate of kottu! Be warned though, it's not for the faint-hearted or those with heartburn. Life-saving tip: have a glass of iced water (preferably at Arctic temperatures) right beside you.

4

Diving

The seas around the island are full of secret, mostly undiscovered treasures, from coral reefs to sunken ships. If you don't have a PADI diving license, get one from a reputed diving school before heading out. Hikkaduwa to the south and Trincomalee and Nilaveli to the east are some of the most favourite spots for scuba diving.
5. Hot Air balloon ride
Not entirely adventurous, but you'll have a unique and fun time! There are a few agencies that provide rides for you to soar above the treetops in a giant balloon. This is a great way to look at the beautiful island from a new point of view.
