The renowned Wat Mahathat is regarded as being one of Bangkok's foremost religious attractions. It inherits a rich historical legacy, having been considered to be amongst the most significant temples at the time of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Situated on a small islet this temple offers a number of interesting sights for the visitor. Within the temple compound, you will find the remains of a massive central spire, other huge temple buildings and a number of minor buildings. One of this temple's iconic sights is the head that once belonged to a Buddha statue which has become entwined in tree roots. On Sundays, you will find a market for amulets adjacent to the temple where you can find talismans, charms, amulets and traditional medicines.
