Four Tips For The Ultimate Sri Lanka Surf Holiday – Conquer The Barreling Waves Of The Indian Ocean

With sun kissed beaches and crystal clear waters, Sri Lanka is ideal for surfing. But before you jump into the water, there are plenty of things to keep in mind.

1

When to go

The aspect that makes Sri Lanka perfect for surfing is that it rarely ever has an off season. The location close to the equator means the country has sunny days all three hundred and sixty five days of the year. However, for the best conditions on the months of May to September, visit Arugam Bay. If you are in the country from November to April, drop by to Hikkaduwa. Of course, you can still find plenty of other excellent locations as long as you ask a couple of locals for their advice.

2

Anyone can surf here

As implied above, the country has plenty of locations for an avid surfer. This means it is easy to find locations for beginners, intermediates as well as professionals. For those just starting out in this sport, make a beeline for Weligama. It has a beach break that makes it safe and ideal for those learning the ropes. The months of October to April are generally considered the best times to visit Weligama. For those skilled in the sport, Unawatuna is usually the spot to be at. Meanwhile, Arugam Bay has points suited for individuals of all stages. With plenty of luxury villas in Sri Lanka, the likes of Pebbles Beach Villa, the only question is deciding where to go!

3

Avoiding the crowds

Let's be honest, sharing the beach with hundreds of other people can be quite a buzz kill at times. Worry not, the country has plenty of secret spots and coves that can help you avoid the loud and unruly crowds. Another technique to get away from the crowds is to drop by to the country between the months of November and April as fewer people visit Sri Lanka during these months. Added bonus! You are sure to come across plenty of three foot to five foot waves during these months. Even during the rare occasions that the ocean is calm, you are guaranteed to come across plenty of other interesting things to do.

4

What to bring

Last but not the least, bringing along all the essentials on your trips will ensure you have a stress free and trouble free surfing experience during your stay. Needless to say, sunscreen is an absolute necessity so is a first aid kit and common disinfectants. Ideally, you should bring your own surfing board but in the event that you do not have one, fear not as there are plenty of operators on the popular beaches who can rent or sell you (whichever you wish) a surfing board. Mosquito repellents are essential too. You are recommended to bring Vitamin C along on your surfing expedition as it is a great tool against infections and keeps up your calcium and magnesium levels while you are out on the beach.
