Best Beaches in Tangalle Sri Lanka – An Underrated Beachside Town

Tangalle, situated close to the southern coast of Sri Lanka has a multitude of beautiful beaches and coves. With a gentle climate all year around, it is an amazing location for beach lovers.

1

Goyambokka Beach

The Goyambokka Beach is a bit away from the usual tourist path and villas like Ranna House, but the journey to the beach is worth it. Most of the tuk drivers around know the place and can take you there. The Goyambokka Beach is present in a secluded cove and comes complete with sunbeds and a restaurant. The sea is not as mild as a beginner would like but a good swimmer should be able to easily handle the waves. The best times to visit the Goyambokka Beach are between the months of November and April and are definitely one of the top things to do in Tangalle.

2

Medaketiya Beach

Seated next to a lagoon, the Medaketiya Beach is well famed for its saturated yellow sands. You can find a number of food stalls and kiosks so fear not, a great and affordable meal is never far away from sight. The nearby lagoon and its calm waters make for some blissful kayaking. The sea is a bit on the rough side so swimming at this beach is not a good idea, but hey, the main attraction at this beach is not swimming. Visit the Medaketiya Beach if you are looking for a laidback atmosphere with beautiful sceneries and even more beautiful sunsets.

3

Mawella Beach

One of the most secluded beaches in Tangalle, the Mawella Beach is ideal for a romantic moment with someone. Most of the time, the only individuals you will come across are fishermen and a couple of stray animals. The blue sky and the warm sun on your back will further heighten this magical moment. As with the above beaches, the seas off Mawella Beach are quite strong making it unsuitable for swimming. Furthermore, there have been reports of occasional undercurrents, which is something you should keep in mind. Not just for a romantic moment, the beach is also perfect for a bit of rest and solitude.

4

Medilla Beach

The Medilla Beach is present next to the Tangalle Lagoon and offers a chilled out ambience. The beach is usually not too crowded while the rocky bay beyond the shores set the stage for some great swimming. A multitude of restaurants and food stalls line the sides of the beach just in case you get hungry after a long swim.

5

Tangalle Lagoon

For fans of kayaking, the Tangalle Lagoon is a heavenly location that thoroughly deserves a visit. One of the biggest lagoons in the country, the pockets of mangrove forests is what mainly makes this lagoon great for kayaking tours. Close to the above Medilla Beach, the Tangalle Lagoon is home to a vast number of rare birds and creatures like iguanas. Renting a kayak is no big deal as many places offer them at an hourly rate.
