Here is our top 12 list of favorite rides that have been retired at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. What was your favorite ride that is no longer there?
Oh the smell of burlap and sweat on a hot summers day. As you get to the top and set down you slide your feet in the bag and get that itchy feeling as you grip the hot slide and get ready to fling yourself down. Maybe this will be the fastest time yet! As you reach the end you grab your bag and walk the steep steps back to the top to do it all over again.
A Chaos type ride that was one of the first of its kind. It inverts its riders in three degrees of motion: lifting, inverting, and spinning. Moved in 2002 to make room for the Dragster, and relocated to the former Schwabinchen location. This attraction ran from 1997 - 2010 and was a scary but fun ride. The line was usually pretty long but always worth it!
This was the one ride that we always had to go on as long as it existed. We got 32 years of fun riding on the skirt if this busty German woman and enjoyed every minute of it. The ride motion pattern resembled that of a spinning coin before coming to rest. The Schwabinchen had a tilted loading platform and it was removed in 2002 to make room for Chaos after the Top Thrill Dragster was built.
What do you do with a boring roller coaster that you thought was going to be a big hit? You enclose it and make the queue-line air conditioned for those hot summer days. By enclosing it no one knows how big the queue-line is and they're out of the heat! Add a few running lights and some darkness and "Ta-Da!" new exciting coaster. From 1985 - 1990 this coaster was called a Bobsled on wheels. In 1991 and until 2012 this coaster was enclosed and called Disaster Transport.
From 1970 - 1978 this coaster was like the one pictured above. From 1979 - 2011 they changed the design, color and platform. Many may remember the green WildCat. This was a four seat ride that had fun twists and turns and the queue-line was never really that long. The footprint for WildCat now houses part of Valravn.
The name says it all. Demon Drop. This ride was right near the entrance of the park the majority of its tenure. While not that scary looking from a distance once you are strapped in and take that ride to the top your heart sped up and your palms started to sweat. To add to the excitement the ride moved forward and left you hanging just long enough to realize your fate and then dropped you quickly. One of the fun things people used to do when riding the Demon Drop was hold a coin in their palm face up and watched it as they dropped. People enjoyed the Demon Drop for 26 years in Sandusky until it was relocated in 2009 to Dorney Park.
If you're a fan of dark rides like we are then you would have loved the Earthquake. It took you through a history lesson and let you relive the earthquake and wildfires of California in 1933. Lots of fun and a great ride to take your new girl/boyfriend on. This ride was available from 1965 - 1984.
OK so it's not a ride but from 1965 - 1994 it was a major attraction to any Cedar Point fan and many of us old fogies remember watching Jungle Larry on Captain Penny. With it's hourly shows and unique animals such and the lion/tiger breed we all looked forward to walking through the African Safari even though the smell was sometimes very pungent.
One thing you can tell by this photo was that the Jumbo Jet was a 70's ride. With the cutoff jeans, short shorts and slinky tops you had to love this decade. Although short lived (only 6 years from 1972 - 1978) the Jumbo Jet was the first steel coaster many got to experience. If you were one of the few that got to experience this coaster and want to have the pleasure once again. Fear not for Jumbo Jet is currently located at Dreamland in Minsk, Belarus.
And what a fun house it was. We can still remember attending the park the year it was taken down and being discouraged and a little upset. This fun house had many twists and turns including an old lady rocking her chair on the ceiling (which was actually the floor, it was upside down) with her cat barely escaping tragedy. One thing is for sure, you seldom left the fun house without a bruise here or there. Especially when entering the slanted room!
One of our all time favorite dark rides. This ride was located right by the Blue Streak and had pirates shouting out to you as you would hear cannon balls hit the water every so often. And that was just on the outside of the ride! Inside was great fun even though it was a bit hokey compared to today's Disney standards. The Pirate Ride kept people entertained from 1966 - 1996.
You've been waiting for it and here it is. Number one on our list is the Space Spiral. Why the Space Spiral you may ask. Well, for years and as long as we can remember the Space Spiral WAS Cedar Point. You saw it as you drove to the park on the causeway and it was one of the first things you saw until the mega coaster were constructed. The Space Spiral was built in 1965 and had a long run not being dismantled till 2012. We salute you Space Spiral and will always remember the great view of the park you gave us when the sun went down.
