Join me, a regular teacher, as I blog through the Common Core State Standards. I'm seeking to learn the Common Core standards, their implications for the classroom, and their impact on the college and career readiness of students.
Donalyn Miller is a 6th grade language arts teacher in Texas who is said to have a "gift": She can turn even the most reluctant (or, in her words, "dormant") readers into students who can't put their books down.
The Alabama State Board of Education approved the adoption of the internationally benchmarked Common Core State Standards along with selected Alabama standards in November 2010. By combining both Common Core and Alabama's standards, our state has adopted one of the most comprehensive sets of standards in the nation, ensuring students are prepared for a successful future in the ever-expanding global environment. This website was created to help Alabama educators better understand the standards as well as provide high-quality resources and instructional materials to implement the CCRS. By also providing the Alabama Insight online curriculum tool to each district in Alabama, educators can explore and map the standards. Passwords are maintained by each District's Technology Coordinator.
The link for Kid-Friendly Standards provides an opportunity to view California’s grade level content standards in Language Arts and Math in terms they can more readily understand. Please feel free to click on the link and find the grade level for your child.

The Reading Like a Historian curriculum turns students into historical investigators. Students may find this change jarring after a steady diet of reading a textbook and answering questions. The three lessons in the Introduction--Lunchroom Fight, Evaluating Sources, and Snapshot Autobiography--help students recognize skills of historical inquiry they already practice everyday, such as reconciling conflicting claims and evaluating the reliability of narrative accounts. The challenge is to apply these skills while reading. Reading Like a Historian classroom posters remind students what questions they should be asking as they read historical documents.
