Best Case Textbooks

I have always been a huge fan of learning through cases, so over the years I've purchased more case books than I am comfortable admitting. Below are my favorite - please add your favorites as well so we can let our list of community favorites grow. While the title says "textbooks", I'm including all other kinds of case-based resources on apps and websites as well.

Bouncebacks! Emergency Department Cases: ED Returns: 9781890018610: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com

This book by Mike Weinstock (emrap host and contributor) and Greg Henry is simply amazing. It goes through real ED cases with real EMR documentation, offers expert commentary on the documentation and the risks after the first visit before the patient "bounces back" with a bad outcome. Its especially helpful for those of you who work in lower acuity sections of the ED because the initial ED visits are usually triaged as lower acuity... this book is about how to pick up those secretly sick, with an emphasis on medical malpractice.

Resuscitation! App for phones

Resuscitation! is the award-winning virtual patient simulator that makes learning medicine addictive! Resuscitation gives you a case presentation of a patient who is ill, and you play the role of the health care provider. You are in control and can take a history, perform a physical exam, develop a differential diagnosis and administer therapy to treat the patient’s underlying problem. You can place the patient on a monitor, start IV’s, perform procedures, administer medications, obtain radiology studies, EKGs, and a LOT more.

Resuscitation! is a very technical medical simulator and is designed mainly for health students and professionals who are interested in learning patient care. It is used by medical schools and residencies across the Unites States and has won multiple innovation awards. Resuscitation! has been played over 2 million times by tens of thousands of engaged learners.

Really excellent resource! Highly recommended for students, interns, residents or new APP grads to get into the rhythm of chief complaint approaches, what tests specifically you need to order, etc.

This book goes a step further from the other books and actually talks about the testimony from the trial / court cases. VERY good read and eye opening for sure.

This is an old textbook - do not use it to learn up to date treatment. It is however one of my favorite case-based textbooks. You start with a patient case, and the author puts you in the shoes of the doctor and the thought process they would go through. Excellent dissection of the thought process. Great resource for students and new learners trying to transition from didactic knowledge to clinical application.

Excellent book to cover the basics for students interested in EM. I found the case files books very helpful and had several of them myself. Will give you a nice intro to the bread and butter.
