With a freestanding bath there is a lot more choice over the positioning. A good bathroom fitter can install it near a window or under a skylight to take advantage of a great view.

A built in bath will need sealant placed between the edge of the bath and the wall to stop water finding its way between the gap. This will have to be replaced every so often. This is not needed with a standalone bath

Originally many freestanding baths were made of cast iron or stone which made them extremely heavy as well expensive. Now they come in a variety of lighter and less expensive materials including pressed steel and acrylic.
