Vilamoura is located on the southern coast of Portugal, in the Algarve. The Algarve is considered to be one of the richest regions in Portugal, second only to Madeira and Lisbon. Vilamoura, also known as Almancil or Vila Sol, is one of three corners of the Golden Triangle of Algarve, the remaining corners being Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. Vilamoura lays claim to over two thousand hectares and has hosted the Almond Blossom Cross Country competition and the 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. There are a number of different things to do in Vilamoura ranging from beach activities and golfing, to sailing and swimming.
Inaugurated in 1974, the Marina in Vilamoura is expansive and stunning. While having the ability and capacity to berth over one thousand boats, the marina can be seen by a large number of hotels, holiday homes, casinos, restaurants and bars. Therefore, it is a perfect place for a peaceful stroll followed by a delicious meal at one of the many eateries found in the vicinity. Tourists who fancy a bout of fishing can hire boats from the Marina itself. There are also facilities for boat rides, as well as tours for dolphin watching and cruising along the coastline. Some of the tours of the coastline include the exploration of seaside caves as well.
Vilamoura is home to a significant number of golf courses and is considered to be the 'heart of the golfing scene' in the Algarve. The Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course close to the Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort, the Victoria Golf Course, the Old Course – Dom Pedro Golf Collection, Vila Sol and Pinhal are some of the more prominent golf courses located in the vicinity.
Vilamoura is home to a pristine coastal strip which hosts a number of beautiful beaches. The most well-known beach is undoubtedly the Praia de Falesia which is around six kilometres long. Another beach of equal popularity is the Praia de Vilamoura. Thanks to their soft and sandy beaches and calm waters, the beaches of Vilamoura are quite inviting. Furthermore, a number of operators in the area hire out equipment required for various water sports, and holidaymakers can try their hand at paragliding as well.
The closest city to Vilamoura is Faro which is also the largest city of the Algarve. It is a very peaceful city replete with cultural and historical attractions. Visitors to Faro can explore the ruins of the castle and cathedral, the ancient wall and the peaceful atmosphere of the city while sipping a cup of coffee in one of the road side cafes. Faro is also easily accessible because there is a direct bus that goes back and forth from Vilamoura to Faro.
