Explore the National Museum

There are many treasures housed within this extensive museum. One of the main objects to admire is the 26 foot high, heavily jewelled throne of King Thibaw Min. In addition to this elegant throne that resembles a highly decorative doorway; on display are silver and gold rugs as well as elaborate beds. Other objects on display include betel nut holders, spittoons, beautiful kitchen chairs made out of ivory and some very elegant ceremonial dresses. The upper floors chronicle the country's past while the beautifully refurbished colonial house is very thorough, right down to the most minute of detail; the chandeliers of which are seen on two floors of the museum.

Bogyoke Aung San Museum

Set off on a melancholy journey of history as you tour the home of the late General Aung San. He was assassinated 1947 and still remembered for his prominent work. The walls are adorned with portraits of family members while the sparsely furnished house has a laid back vibe. An air of heavy nostalgia hangs around the place and wandering around, it is, easy to imagine how life was in days of yore; heading out to the garden you will come across the pond in which the second son of this long-suffering family drowned. A definite retreat to absorb a large chunk of Myanmar history, Bogyoke Aung San Museum is just 3 minutes from the Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon.

The Myanmar Gem Museum and Gem Market

The Myanmar Gem Museum in the past was extremely classy; still, even today you can view a few noteworthy stones as well as, a jade bust of General Aung San. The museum is located within a building that is, also home to a number of gem stalls where one can purchase a few valuable souvenirs. The museum located on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30 am to 4 pm.

The New Zero Art Space

One of the popular things to do in Yangon is to explore the beautiful Kandawgyi Lake district. Located there is this contemporary museum, easily reached from Yangon hotels in the district. Offering a fine take on modernism, the place displays sculptures, photography, videos and plays host to various artistic skits. Budding artists are wholly encouraged here with workshops and seminars. Besides, you will love wandering around the Lake District and drinking in the stunning views.

Lokanat Gallery

This is Yangon's first art gallery for modernism. Open in 1971, the place is located within a vintage 1906 building. There are shows there which change on a weekly basis, while the surroundings are highly conducive to explore, giving one a taste of Yangon's historical culture and traditions. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
