The Supported Child Development Program (SCD) assists families of children who require additional support to access inclusive child care programs. Working with daycares, preschools, family daycares and out of school care programs, we provide consultation services and extra staffing assistance to ensure inclusive practices for children who have a demonstrated need for extra support.

Reach Child and Youth Development Society - Some children may be identified as needing support due to a delay or difficulty in some area of development. Other children may demonstrate some need for support that has not been identified. In these situations, Supported Child Development works with families and child care providers to meet the individual needs.

Supported Child Development is a community-based program that is grounded in the belief that inclusion and family centred practice are important in helping children who require any level of support to actively participate in a full range of child care settings.
Inclusion as an overall philosophy supports the right of all children, regardless of their abilities, to participate actively in natural settings within their communities. It is an approach to delivering service in which all children are welcomed, supported and valued. It means that the activities of play, learning and growing happen in a way that all children feel that they belong. Supported Child Development recognizes that as parents, you know your child best and are the most important member of the team. We work in collaboration with you and the childcare program to best support your child.

Aboriginal Supported Child Development (ASCD) is a provincial program, funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) that is designed to specifically meet the needs of Aboriginal children with special needs.

Supported Child Development (SCDP) is a community-based program that assists families of children with extra support needs to access inclusive child care that meets family needs. The program is intended to serve children from birth to 12, with services for youth 13 � 19 years available in some communities.

We can help children who need extra support to participate successfully in a childcare program. We work with families whose child is up to 12 years of age and needing support, perhaps due to developmental delays, challenging behaviour, speech or language delays or exceptional health care needs.

Our Supported Child Development Program is part of the Early Intervention Team. This team consists of Infant Development Consultants, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech-language Pathologists, Physicians, Public Health Nurses, and Infant Development Consultants.

This program provides support to families who have children with special needs by helping them to obtain services in community child care settings. Staff assist the families and child care agencies put plans into place to ensure the child has the best opportunity to develop to their fullest potential. The primary focus is on children zero to six years and depending upon budget availability children ages seven through twelve years are a continued priority.

The West/ Kootenay Boundary SCDP program is intended to serve children from birth to 12, with services for youth 13 – 19 years currently available on a case-by-case basis. Children who require extra support to be included in a child care setting due to a developmental delay or disability in physical, cognitive, communicative or emotional, social, behavioural areas living in the West Kootenay Boundary region are eligible. Our program has 4 consultants who serve areas including, but not limited to: Castlegar, Trail, Nelson, Rossland, Fruitvale, Grand Forks, Rock Creek, Kaslo, New Denver, Nakusp, Salmo, Winlaw, South Slocan & all communities in between.

All families have similar hopes and dreams for their children – that they will be happy, have friends, enjoy learning and live meaningful lives. For young children with extra support needs, inclusive child care provides an optimal environment for children to achieve these goals and maximize their potential.

This program supports children from birth to twelve years of age, who have a developmental disability to fully participate in inclusive neighbourhood child care programs. The Supported Child Development Program (SCDP) is a community-based program that assists families of children with extra support needs to access inclusive child care programs of their choice. The program serves children from birth up to their 13th birthday.

Our Consultant provides resources, guidance and access to additional child care support funds while children, who have developmental delays, require the use of day care centers. Transitioning from day care to Kindergarten can be a challenge for many parents. The Consultant can assist to ensure a positive transition to a classroom environment.

Support may include consultation with Preschool Teachers and Child Care Providers and/or direct support from a SCD Educator.

SCDP provides the following services to support children, families, and child care providers:

-Individual planning to promote each child’s development

-Training and information for families and child care providers to help each child’s development

-Resources such as books, toys and specialized equipment

-Referrals to other services such as therapists or specialists

-Where necessary, additional staffing to ensure that children may participate fully with their peers.

SCDP operates under the principles of inclusion and family centred practice. SCDP uses a multi-disciplinary team approach. Parents may self-refer, or with parent consent, referrals may come from other service providers. The service is voluntary and free of charge.
