Filling in the gaps – dental implants and how they work

If you’re missing a tooth or two and feel like your confidence is lacking, you’ll be pleased to know that there are permanent solutions available that can make you feel like a new man or woman.
Unlike dentures or bridges, dental implants offer a safe, permanent and lower maintenance alternative that last for years to come.

How do dental implants work?

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are tiny metal posts that are mounted into your jawbone through a small surgical procedure carried out by your dentist. The healing process causes the implant to fuse with the surrounding tissues, giving it structure and holding it in place. When the implant has bonded with the jawbone, your dentist will put a connector on top of it to connect it with the rest of your teeth. An individual, artificial tooth (crown) or bridge is then attached to the connector.

In most cases, there will be some pain, swelling and bruising for seven to 10 days after the dental implant procedure. In usual cases, patients can eat normally after this time, but some are advised to eat a modified diet for four to six weeks, depending on their individual case.

Maintaining oral hygiene practises and home care ensures that plaque and bacteria does not gather around your new implant and can reduce recovery time.

When adequately maintained, the dental implant itself can last a lifetime, while the crown has a lifespan of around 15 years when looked after properly. You can increase the length of your crown and implant by ensuring a high level of oral hygiene, visiting your dentist regularly, not smoking and not eating hard foods like boiled sweets.

The cost of dental implants depends entirely on each individual case and its individual needs. When you have a consultation with your dentist, pricing will be discussed with you.
