5 Things You Didn't Know About the Bali Vegan Festival - Embracing a Health-Conscious Lifestyle

This Festival is being held for the 3rd time in Ubud from the 6th to the 8th of October 2017. Learn about the benefits of veganism at the Bali Vegan Festival.

The Bali Vegan Festival is a Relatively New Phenomenon

Being vegan used to be a lifestyle choice motivated by the determination to live without relying on any animal by-product. In fact, some vegans even argue that mankind was originally lactose intolerant and that the tolerance to milk and other milk based products developed as a gimmick of evolution. Undoubtedly, the fact that the Indonesian island of Bali hosts a vegan festival would come as a surprise to most, especially because it is a relatively recent phenomenon. It was organised and carried out for the first time in 2015 in due cognisance of the fact that veganism was becoming a popular choice, especially amongst millennials. This year, the Bali Vegan Festival will take place from the 6th to the 8th of October in Ubud.

The Reason Behind the Festival

The primary motivation behind organising the vegan festival in Bali is to inculcate a healthy and ethical lifestyle amongst people. It hopes to encourage veganism amongst a greater number of people by highlighting the health benefits of adopting such a lifestyle. The festival also hopes to send messages of love and compassion towards all living beings and encourage healthy practices such as yoga and meditation. Therefore, even vegans residing an hour away in a Seminyak Bali resort may be tempted to partake in the Festival.

Do you have to be a Vegan to Attend the Festival?

Not at all! Given that one of the primary purposes of organising the festival is to encourage others to also join this ethical lifestyle, the festival invites and hopes to attract people from all kinds of faiths and lifestyles. Those who wish to attend the festival should make the relevant inquiries from the concierge of the hotel they are staying at and resorts such as Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort that are used to such requests will often arrange transport for you.

What Actually Happens at the Festival?

The vegan festival does not merely have vegan food for the consumption of its attendees. The festival also hosts cooking demonstrations, talks, vegan products and expert education. At these events, attendees will learn that being vegan does not mean that one must forgo enjoying food, but instead, learn to prepare food that is delicious, nutritious, ethically sourced and cruelty free. The festival also hosts community discussions as a means to disseminate information and to obtain public views on questions that persist in the field of veganism. Furthermore, the food that is prepared for consumption at this festival are usually sourced from nearby resorts. Previous festivals have also hosted events and features such as a circus for little children, films for all audiences, documents and art workshops.
