Checklist for Houseboating -How To Cruise in Style in Sri Lanka

Planning a river cruise in Sri Lanka? Then you might want to read this through and find out all the essential things to pack for your houseboating trip.

Sun Screen

Unless you want to look like a boiled lobster and get seriously sunburnt on your holiday, don't forget to pack a big bottle of sunscreen. You can bring your trusted brand, or buy a local version from one of the many supermarkets or shops. If you do get sunburnt somehow, apply some aloe vera for treatment. If it's a really bad case of sunburnt, check into an Ayurvedic spa.

Fishing Gear

Time to put those lessons your old man taught you into good use. Fishing is one of the most fun things to do while you houseboating in Sri Lanka for there are many exotic fish species to catch. Talk to the houseboat operator well in advance to inquire about fishing gear, bait and even fishing licences.

Sri Lanka is home to an extraordinary collection of wildlife some which can be seen while cruising along its famous rivers such as the Madu Ganga, which makes up the Madu Ganga Wetland, a complex coastal wetland ecosystem of high biological, ecological, and aesthetic significance. So, you better be equipped with a good pair of binoculars to spot some of its most fascinating of inhabitants such as exotic birds. Some house boat tour operators like Yathra by Jetwing has specially designed packages for nature enthusiasts such as bird watching tours.

Camera or Camcorder

Though nowadays smartphones have the capability to easily capture the best moments of your vacation, it's always better to bring along a camera to make sure your photos are of the best quality- after all, you don't want to show your friends back home any grainy photos of your wonderful time along the river, right?

Food & Beverage

Even though your tour operator offers food and drinks as part of the package, it's always best to bring some of your favorite snacks and drinks along, especially if you're travelling with kids who are picky eaters. Make sure to pack in medicine such as aspirin just in case as well as something to curb the "river sickness".

Houseboat tours like the above mentioned also offer special dinner cruises that are ideal for lovebirds, jus imagine cruising along while having a romantic candlelight dinner!

Hiking Boots or Sandals

If you're cruising a river such as the Madu Ganga, you're bound to make a few stops to explore some of the attractions in and around the river, so it's always best to pack a good pair of hiking shoes and sandals to wear depending on where you're going. The Madu Ganga for example, has many islets spread across that are well worth exploring. One of them is Madol Doowa after which a novel was written by one of Sri Lanka's greatest authors. There also the Cinnamon Island where you can find out how cinnamon is sourced and made. The only time you won't be needing your shoes is when you treat yourself to a soothing feet massage at one of the little fish spas located by the Madu Ganga banks!
