An infatuation of many a nature enthusiast, Passikudah's outer bay is acclaimed for its scattered coral reefs fringed within. The bay's shallow fringe coral reef protects the inner line of the bay and boasts of an array of coral communities. Aside from being considered a marine sanctuary, the bay is considered one of the choicest reef systems in Sri Lanka's East Coast. Placid waters prevail the inner reef lagoon making this the perfect spot to make a splash. With soft, white-golden sandy beaches virtually made for sunbathing and a bay naturally designed to accommodate myriad water sports, the Passikudah Bay is a must-see.
Hotels in Pasikuda have recognised that the extended shallow coastline of Passikudah makes it an ideal location for shallow swimming as well as sunbathing while the town's offshore reef shelters the beach, making it one of the best places for many water sports, particularly water surfing and kitesurfing. Minneriya National Park is an attraction that is not to be missed. The park was established in 1997 to conserve the surrounding wildlife and derives its name from the Minneriya reservoir located a stone's throw away from the park. The park is now one of Sri Lanka's most popular tourist attractions and wildlife sanctuaries. With endemic wildlife visible during the season and being home to one of the world's largest gatherings of Asian elephants, the Minneriya National Park is every nature enthusiast's haven.
Polonnaruwa's archaeological sites include ancient ruins, a collection of ancient ruins called the quadrangle and the famed Cultural Triangle, that provide a glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich and winding historical heritage. Enjoy an hour's drive from Passikudah to this notable archaeological relic city that was once an ancient kingdom comprising of some of the island's most revered and honourable rulers. If endless picturesque scenery, culture and history are your cup of tea, Polonnaruwa has to be at the top of your list!
Witness these magnificent cetaceans in their natural habitat in Trincomalee. Located around 110 km from Passikudah, most whale sightings take place between March or April and August or September as they migrate around the island from their native South Coast where they bide time from December to April. Whale watching is fast becoming one of the most favoured holiday activities by locals and tourists alike. A definite must-add to your bucket list!
