Fun Things to do When You Are in Yangon, Myanmar - Pagodas, Parks, Markets and More!

1. Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda
Towering at a height of one hundred meters, the Schwedagon Pagoda can be seen from most of Yangon. At the summit of the pagoda is the 'hti' which is complete with gold and jewels. The Pagoda is generally open daily from 4am – 10pm and the entrance fee is 8, 000 Kyats. This leviathan building is truly a sight to behold and an experience that simply shouldn't be missed on an adventure to Myanmar.

2. Explore the Heart of Yangon on Foot
One of the best ways to explore the city is on foot. While walking, tourists will be able to take in the architecture as well as sample the street food in Yangon. 3. See the Sule Pagoda
It appears that all roads in Yangon lead to Sule Pagoda. As a result, it is found in the middle of downtown Yangon. It is open from 6am – 8pm every day and there is an entrance fee of US$ 3.

4. Do Some Shopping at the Bogyoke Aung San Market
Built in 1926, the Bogyoke Aung San Market was formerly known as the Scott Market. Within the Market, patrons can purchase a myriad of goods ranging from fabrics and jewellery to souvenirs and handicrafts. If you're looking for authentic souvenirs, then this is the place.

5. Walk Through Chinatown
Chinatown in Yangon is found to the west of the Sule Pagoda and covers the area between 24th Street and 18th Street. Each Street is known for delicious street food such as pork skewers, rice congee, barbeque meats and stir fried dishes, so be sure to bring an appetite on your visit. Chinatown is best visited in the evenings.

6. Relax at the Kandawgyi Park and the Bogyoke Park
One of the most beautiful areas in Yangon is the Kandawgyi Park. The park is complete with a lake board walk and overlooks the Shwedagon Pagoda. This is also one of the best places to witness the sunset in Yangon. An entrance fee of 30 cents (USD) is charged to access the restaurant area and another US$2 or so to access the boardwalk. Tourists can also opt to visit the neighbouring Bogyoke Park. To access the park, continue along Nat Mauk Street, pass the Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon on the right and continue till you see the Kandawgyi Lake which borders the Park.

7. Stand in Awe in Front of the Chaukhtatgyi Paya
The Chaukhtatgyi Paya, also known as the Chak Htat Gyi Buddha, refers to a Reclining Buddha which is around sixty-five metres long. Entrance to see the Reclining Buddha is free, which is an added incentive to visit this internationally renowned monument.
