The historical and beautiful city of Galle is located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, which means this town has plenty of golden sandy beaches and enticing waters for you to play in.

Scuba diving

Scuba diving is a popular water activity to partake in when you're in Galle. The waters around Galle are teeming with marine life, from crabs to blue whales and everything in between! If you are PADI certified, the waters here are the best to explore through. However, for the less experienced, snorkelling is also possible in Hikkaduwa. With a natural reef that is home to a wide variety of marine creatures, snorkelling is a rewarding experience that will keep you busy for hours! An ideal time to go snorkelling in areas like Unawatuna, a short drive from Galle, is between the months from November to May. You'll be able to spot moray eels, sea turtles, parrot fish and plenty of other reef fish. The beaches of Sri Lanka are known to be home to 5 different species of turtles; all of which have been listed under the Endangered Species category.

2

Jet Ski

Head away from the reef of Hikkaduwa and you'll be able to partake in jet skiing! Many coastal towns along the south of the island offer plenty of opportunities for jet skiing. If you're looking for a place to stay, perhaps with a large group, luxury villas in Sri Lanka are quite abundant and easy to find such as Pebbles Beach Villa.

3

Kayak

Kayaking through the tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean is the ideal way to explore the coast. Many coastal towns even have rivers running through them, where kayaking activities are most popular as it gives visitors a slow paced way to explore through the mangroves. The mangroves in the south are home to a beautiful variety of flora and fauna, from crocodiles to water lizards! Keep your eye out for them and try not to fall over!

4

Towable Rides

Closer to many beach side resorts or those located near rivers and lagoons, towable rides are quite popular. These rides are fun and provide heaps of excitement for people of all ages! Thrill seekers will be able to choose from banana boats to an inflatable donut shaped ride, which can be enjoyed by the whole family or alone.

5

Surfing

The enticing waters of the Indian Ocean surrounding the southern coast of Sri Lanka are perfect for surfers. Surfing enthusiasts from around the world head to the island to try their hand at mastering some of the biggest waves they can catch! The waves at Hikkaduwa, Galle and Mirissa are most popular for surfing pros. However, if you're new to the surfing scene, the waters of Weligama Bay are ideal for beginners as they are shallow and small. If you don't have your board, fret not – as there are numerous beach side stalls which rent out surf boards by the hour, as well as surfing instructors for beginners.
