Things to do near Ahangama - Evoke the adventurer in you in Ahangama

Ahangama is a quaint Sri Lankan village with a charming aesthetic where coconut trees pave beaches that are punctuated by scenic sunsets. With so much to explore, it is coastal utopia exemplified.

The old Galle Fort

As Ahangama is located right between Galle and Mirissa, Galle makes for a great day trip where travellers can browse the various boutiques, art shops and colonial boutiques that pave the streets of Galle. Amongst things to do in Sri Lanka, the old Galle Fort has been awarded the distinction of being the most well-preserved sea fort in the South Asian subcontinent and is considered a living heritage site. Spanning 222 acres, the historic fort is an iconic amalgamation of architecture with fortifications that bear a close resemblance to that of Portugal's coastal areas. Visitors touring the fort will find that it has retained its old-world charm and is devoid of the traffic congestion that much of the country experiences.

Handunugoda Tea Estate

The Handunugoda Tea Estate is a family owned 150-acre plantation in Ahangama. Half of the land is used for the growing of tea while the remaining half has been allocated for the growing of rubber, cinnamon and coconut. A well-equipped tea factory sits on the tea estate with some of the machines in the factory being over 140 years old. The factory is a living and working museum for its artisanal tea production that has garnered international acclaim. Be sure to inquire after their world famous 'Virgin White Tea'- a tea, untouched by human hands, that has been at the forefront of the attention of tea enthusiasts from all over the world.

Driving South of Galle will take you along the island's picturesque Southern coastline to the neighbouring beach of Ahangama that has subtly made a name for itself as one of the best surfing locations in Sri Lanka. If you're a surfer who prefers less commercial surf spots, Weligama Bay is just for you. With a shallow sharp reef, surfers are guaranteed a perfect take off. Travellers will find Surf lessons, surfboard hires and a surf camp for amateur and professional surfers with considerable ease, making this the idyllic surfer haven.

The stilt fishermen of Ahangama

A visit to Ahangama is not complete without observing one of the nation's most emblematic figures- the stilt fishermen on Ahangama beach. The fishermen spend hours perched aboard the cross bar of a solitary pole firmly entrenched in the sea-bed casting their lines out to the sea in the hope of catching small fish that swim in the shallow offshore water. The sight of this is a novelty to travellers. Many opt to stay on vacation at resorts by the Deep South's secluded shores in Ahangama's fishing hamlet in close proximity to the likes of the Mosvold Villa and Pebbles Beach.
