Top five beaches in Sri Lanka -The best of the lot

Sri Lanka has some of the best beaches in the world and is known for being a tropical island of paradise. Let's take a look at the best and most sought after beaches on this island.

1

Hikkaduwa

When you think of beach holidays in Sri Lanka, the first thing that comes to mind is Hikkaduwa. Famous for having the most chilled and laid back vibes in all of Sri Lanka, this beach is for the surfers and party goers. The sun, sea and sands provide the perfect backdrop for various water sports and other activities. Just a couple of hours away from Colombo, Hikkaduwa is a must visit if you are a beach bum and love lounging on beach chairs with a cold drink in your hand.

2

Unawatuna

When compared to Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna is quieter and entertains a broader crowd of visitors. The resorts and luxury hotels in Unawatuna are impressive, to say the least, and can be booked with ease if you are travelling with the help of a place like Aitken Spence Travels. Turtle watching is a popular activity on these beaches and the best time to go is in November or April as you can expect calmer seas and clearer views of the horizon.

3

Pasikuda and Kalkudah

Crashing on the east coast of the island, the waves on this beach are a startling blue and are a pleasing view to look at. The bay has a flat bed and is, therefore, the perfect place to wade and play around in the waters. The beach shores are reef secured, which makes the waves on this part of the island much calmer. Sun bathing, staring into the sea or watching a sunset are things you can get lost in while at Pasikuda and Kalkudah. If you are an early riser, walk out to the beach and watch the fishermen haul in their daily catch just before the sun rises.

4

Arugam Bay Beach

The first thing that comes to mind when one hears this name is surfing. The Arugam Bay Point is so good that it attracts surfers from all over the world to come try the waves out. The waves go as high as 10 metres on the good days and offer a challenge to even the pro surfers. A dream surf point for the surfers and adventure seekers, Arugam Bay is a must visit if you love thrilling water sports.

5

Bentota Beach

Perfect for the quiet beach vacation, Bentota beach is for the ones who love calm vacations that include long walks on the beach and dinners under the stars. If you want to spice things up, you can always go scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, deep sea fishing, and wind surfing or canoeing. Sound perfect, does it not? True luxury can be had on these beaches and the prices needn't scare you either, you can find all types of accommodation in Bentota, from the resorts to the bed and breakfasts for the backpackers and budget travellers.
