First of all, congratulations! Choosing an adult brace is a big decision and one you will definitely not regret when you have perfectly straightened teeth.
Caring for your brace is an important part of achieving these results, so here we offer a few key tips for keeping them clean and in good condition throughout the course of your treatment.
It’s essential that you keep to your usual oral hygiene routine and you’ll probably find you have to be even more thorough than usual. Although it’s normally advised to brush and floss your teeth twice a day, when wearing adult braces you should try to clean and rinse after each meal.
Hard, sticky and chewy foods can cause inevitable issues for brace wearers and can be very difficult to remove. Popular foods such as apples, carrots, bread rolls, popcorn and sweets are just some of those best avoided, and chewing gum is definitely off the menu, too!
If you’ve always had an inclination to bite your nails or chew pen tops this is a good time to stop! These bad habits can have painful consequences when wearing an adult brace, and may require an unexpected trip to the orthodontist. Smoking is always ill advised, but because oral health is so important to brace wearers it should be avoided at all costs.
After your adult brace has been fitted you will usually need to organise a check-up with your orthodontist every six to eight weeks. These sessions provide an essential opportunity for your orthodontist to check how the brace is working and identify any issues, so always keep your appointment!
