The elephant is a true icon of Sri Lanka, and when in Habarana you have so many opportunities to see these gentle giants. Journey to the Minneriya National Park, that's just about 10 minutes away from Habarana, and you'll see them roaming around in the wild in all their glory. The sanctuary is famous for its elephant gathering which sees over 200 individuals attracted to the Minneriya tank and the verdant grass fields. The number of elephants seen here is said to go as high as 700 during the dry season when elephants from far as the Wasgamuwa National Park migrate here in search food and shelter.
In addition to elephants, the Minneriya National Park is home to a wide collection of wildlife which includes two species of monkeys that are endemic to the country; Sri Lankan sambar deer, sloth bears, the grey slender loris and the majestic Sri Lankan leopard, to name a few.
