Top Must Try Dishes of Phuket – Taking the Taste Buds on an Adventure!

The island of Phuket in Thailand offers some wonderful foodie adventures, giving visitors a chance to sample flavourful Thai cuisine. Here are some dishes well worth trying when here.

1

Gaeng Keow Wan Gai

This dish is basically a type of green curry chicken that has its own unique flavour and aroma. A favourite amongst foodies, one of Gaeng Keow Wan Gai's distinctive features is that as part of its preparation, not one but two eggplant types are used. Apart from adding to the flavour, it is believed that the eggplants have another beneficial quality about them, namely helping to reduce cholesterol levels. Possible health benefits aside, it is a yummy dish worth trying when in Phuket.

2

Tom Yum Goong

Famous the world over, Tom Yum Goong is a type of Thai soup that certainly packs a punch! Spicy and bursting with strong flavours created by ingredients such as lemongrass, this soup is mostly known for its version that comes with prawns; versions with seafood, pork ribs and chicken can be found as well. Consisting red chilli, coconut milk, mushroom and zesty spices and herbs, this soup is a must try be it at a roadside eatery, café or beach restaurant in Phuket.

3

Massaman Curry

If you are looking for a flavourful dish that is not as spicy as some of the other Thai dishes one will find in Phuket, then Massaman curry is one worth trying. Made with coconut milk which lends it a rather sweet flavour, the curry is balanced with a sourness that comes from the lime or tamarind juice that is also used. Peanuts, tomatoes and basil are amongst the other ingredients that bring this dish together to create unique flavours and aromas. Best eaten with noodles or steamed rice, Massaman curry is usually made with beef, fish or pork. If looking to try the beef version, you can head to the Dee Plee restaurant at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort.

4

Hokkien Mee

If you are a fan of all things noodles, then it goes without saying you should try some Hokkien Mee when in Phuket. This dish made with stir-fried noodles, seafood and other meats may be relatively "simple" but it certainly is big on taste and is accompanied by some fiery sambal for that added spiciness. When it comes to ingredients, a typical Hokkien Mee dish will have squid, prawn and pork along with bean sprouts and egg for a delectable dining experience.

5

Roti Pancake

No foodie tour of Phuket is complete without trying something sweet and when it comes to dessert or for satisfying a sweet tooth, there's nothing like trying some roti pancake. This Thai style of making sweet pancakes involves making a dough that apart from containing the usual eggs, flour, sugar and salt, also has condensed milk which adds to the sweetness. Another important element to this pancake is the filling which generally contains fruits, depending on the kind you select. Some places even add a scoop of ice cream to make a dessert that is sheer bliss!
