Places to Visit in Colombo – Fun Adventures in a City by the Sea

Located by the Indian Ocean, Colombo the commercial capital of Sri Lanka offers plenty of fun adventures for the whole family. Here are some must visit sites in the city.

1

Gangaramaya Temple

A unique Buddhist temple in Colombo, Gangaramaya makes for a fascinating visit. This relatively large temple complex is home to a diverse collection of statues, artefacts and items that have been gifted over the years and makes for a one of a kind setting. Being a Buddhist temple, you will find a large array of Buddha statues and imagery, though along with these, especially at its museum, there are statues of Hindu deities, various religious trinkets and even a statue of a Chinese emperor! Additionally, there is a stupa at the premises beside a bo tree and this quiet space is an ideal place for some meditation.

2

Beira Lake

Within easy reach of the Gangaramaya Temple is Beira Lake and a visit to this site is one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka. Located in the heart of the city, this picturesque lake area offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle and is a great place to unwind at. Here you will also find what is known as the Seema Malaka Temple, a sacred Buddhist site featuring many statues of Lord Buddha. There is a small island on Beira Lake that can be reached via a bridge, while one can also look to take one of the swan pedal-boats out for a leisurely ride on the water.

3

National Museum

For a chance to learn a bit about the country's history, visit the National Museum. It is the island's largest museum and is housed in a historical building. You can easily reach such sites by way of tuk-tuks or by hiring a vehicle from local car companies such as Malkey Rent A Car. Within the National Museum are all manner of ancient artefacts and fascinating exhibits that will help one get a better understanding of the rich heritage of Sri Lanka including the time's kings ruled the island's mighty kingdoms.

4

Odel Fashion Store

If you are interested in doing a bit of shopping, for clothes in particular, then make sure you head to the main branch of the Odel fashion store. Close to the National Museum, this Odel store in the locale known as Town Hall offers a huge selection of fashion for men, women and kids as well as accessories, homeware, books, toys and more. There is a range of dining options here too.

5

Galle Face Green

The perfect place to end a tour of Colombo, the large public expanse known as Galle Face Green is right by the sea and is an ideal spot to take in a magical sunset. Popular with locals, this area can get quite lively on weekends with families, couples and solo travellers enjoying the laidback coastal vibe. This spot is also great to visit if you want to sample some of Colombo's famed street food be it the deep fried prawn snack called "isso wade" or the yummylicious roti based dish, "kottu roti".
