Cancer is a tricky disease to control and though there is no certain cure for it, there are a number of fruits that will aid in reducing the effects of it as well as those that will exacerbate it.

Sour sop

Also commonly known as Graviola, this tropical fruit stems from the Annona plant; which is known to minimize inflammation, prevent infections and much more. The fruit has been known to destroy cancer cells and ward off persistent diseases, due to being packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients. Soursop is said to be packed with vitamin C, vitamin B, magnesium, iron, calcium and iron; all of which aid in reducing the chances of getting cancer. Soursop most commonly grows in Southeast Asia, South America and Africa. Soursop is also one of the common fruits in Sri Lanka and fresh fruits can be found in most supermarkets such as Keells Super.

Goji Berry

The Goji Berry is a highly regarded berry that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the last thousand years. Classified in the top 120 herbs that are used for medicinal purposes in the world, the goji berry; also known as the Chinese Wolfberry aids is extending the lifespan of an individual and providing strength. The berry aids in detoxifying and providing nourishment to the kidney and liver channels. Goji berries are listed as one of the superfoods that help in combating the deadly cancer cells, as it is known to have about 18 amino acids, most of which the body cannot produce. The fruit also contains magnesium, iron, vitamin, A, E, C, B1, B2 and B6, along with omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.

Gardenia Fruit

Also known as Zhi Zi, this health benefit of consuming this fruit was found after a study which included 'starving' out the cancer cells by The Nutritional Oncology Research Institute. The Gardenia fruit was one of the fruits that were known to trigger apoptosis. By eating this fruit, a mitochondrial protein known as UCP2 is prevented from protecting the cancer cells. The fruit has also been known to help treat insomnia, influenza and lower blood pressure.

Citrus Fruits

The most commonly eaten citrus fruits are lime, lemon and orange are known to aid the reduction of cancer cells. Citrus fruits are known to be rich in vitamin C, which helps to combat diseases and to boost the immune system. Citrus fruits are high in nobiletin, flavonoids and vitamin C, which boost the growth of new blood vessels. With a large consumption of citrus fruits, it is known that people have a reduced risk of developing colon cancer, lung cancer and other types of cancer. The fruits also help healthy cells to become stronger while also preventing the ones that contribute to cancer.

Mangosteen

A common fruit found in South Asia, Mangosteen has a hard purple shell and are juicy and white on the inside. Mangosteens are rich in energy, protein, fibre, magnesium, iron, calcium, vitamin A, C, B6 and b12, amongst many others. The fruit is known to contain xanthones which are said to have anti bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Xanthones are also said to inhibit cell growth.
