05 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Maldives – Select the Best Spots to Explore

Maldives is not shy of beautiful locations to explore. The following list helps you choose the best stunners from amongst the 26 atolls. Explore the corals, white sand beaches and glistening oceans.

Visit Male – Largest Island and Most Lively

Located towards the south edge of the Kaafu Atoll the North Male Atoll is the largest on the archipelago. The first experience of Maldives any visitor has, this city was once known as Mahal; a name that denoted the residence of kings. Even today it is known as the Kings Islands and has many attractions to look forward to. Culture and tradition is rife on this atoll home to the Grand Friday Mosque, National Museum and colourful local Fish Market. Indulge in underwater scooter rides together with plenty of scuba diving and snorkelling.

Banana Reef – Most Popular Dive Location

Banana Reef was the first dive location to put the Maldives on the world map as a dive centre. One of the world's best dive sites this reef is located on the North Male Atoll. Named for its banana shape this reef is a haven for all manner of marine life, a simple dive here will take you across fabulous coral formations, underwater cliffs, caves and overhangs amongst which reef sharks, moray eels, manta rays, turtles and a whole host of other marine life survive. Manta Point easily reached from Adaaran Club Rannalhi is one of the most popular dive locations around Banana Reef.

The Carnival Beach of Male – Aka Artificial Beach

Strange but true the Maldives has an artificial beach. The place exists on the capital and compensates for the islands lack of a proper beach due to modernisation. Mind you since this is not a private resort beach it does not allow skimpy beach attire; instead respect local customs and dress appropriately. In case you are wondering about the name 'carnival beach' it must be noted that the area is so named due to the regular carnival and water sports activities that take place there. In fact the Artificial Beach is a hip place to set off to for some leisurely evening chill sessions due to the laidback jam sessions that take place there.

HP Reef – Scuba Dive amongst Splendid Coral

HP Reef too is on the North Male Atoll and is one of the archipelagos top tourists attractions. The place is home to a myriad of colourful little coral fish, turtles and other sea creatures as well as underwater caves; the place comes highly recommended to those of you who love underwater photography. On the subject of photography the Maldives is known for its spectacular sunsets and although no one place can be recommended for capturing the magic of a fiery sky at sunset, those of you based at one of the water bungalows Maldives is famous for can snap away from your private terrace on the ocean. Definietly one of the best locations on the archipelago!

Utheema Ganduvaru for Culture and History

Utheema Ganduvaru has been likened to a mini green jelly fish that resides on the northern sector of the archipelago. It is the home of national hero Sultan Mohammed Thakurufaanu; revered for his triumphant fight against the invading Portuguese. Do explore the place for its elegant wooden interior, traditional period furniture and typical island like décor and layout.
