5 Fabulous Science News Sources

Part of information literacy is being able to tell "good" sources of information from poor ones. A lot of the "fake news' floating around out there stems from misrepresentation of scientific information. One way to learn to spot misleading or incorrect information is to get used to reading articles from high quality science news sources. This practice results in an information literacy double whammy: First, you'll learn to recognize the characteristics which define good sources of information. Second, you'll stay up to date with the latest research, which will allow you to raise a red flag when you see information that is obviously false.

This list includes some of my favorite sources of reliable, readable, and scientifically accurate news.

nature.com

Nature is known for producing high quality scientific research journals, but their science news as just as interesting and authoritative. Articles cover current events and topics of interest through a scientific lens. This site isn't just for scientists though: articles found here are relevant to everyone.

Nautilus | Science Connected

In addition to being research-based and accurate, I chose Nautilus because of its unique approach to science news. Instead of covering multiple topics at a time, Nautilus covers a single big-picture topic each month from multiple perspectives. The result is a refreshingly simple and easy to navigate visual layout accompanied by readable and engaging content.

Science.gov: USA.gov for Science - Government Science Portal

Science.gov isn't necessarily a science news site. However, it's a good source for free and up-to-date scientific research. Government research is a reliable source of information on a multitude of topics. Go straight to the source and read this research for yourself, rather than waiting for information to be filtered through various news and social media outlets.

New Scientist | Science news and science articles from New Scientist

New Scientist publishes new articles daily, so it's a great source for keeping up with new research, trending topics, and current events. Science News covers a variety of topics including technology, physics, astronomy, health and more.

Live Science

Live Science covers new research and the science behind current events. Relevant and readable, there is something for everyone to get interested in on this site.
