There are many different types of orthodontic braces, with invisible alternatives to metal train tracks becoming more and more popular. With so many options on the market, it can be tricky to know the differences between them all.
In this article, we take a closer look at the different types of braces and how they all work.
Clear aligners like Invisalign are one of the most popular treatments for crooked teeth because they are so easy to use and get fantastic results. They are useful for anyone looking for a discreet tooth straightening solution and work via a mouth guard that’s made from clear medical grade plastic. You wear each set of retainers for approximately two weeks before moving on to the next set, which moves your teeth gradually into a straighter position.
Lingual braces straighten the teeth using brackets and wires that are stuck on to the back of the teeth, making them virtually invisible. They come in many brands, such as Incognito™ Lingual Braces and STb™ Light Lingual System.
While these go on the front of your teeth, they are much less noticeable than metal braces. The brackets are a similar size and shape to metal brackets, but are tooth coloured or clear, and are made by various brands, such as Clarity™, Radiance and InVu.
These braces are fixed to the front of the teeth but use small metal clips instead of elastic bands and each bracket can tie itself to the arch wire. They are often more comfortable than traditional braces and the wires do not need to be tightened at each appointment, which can reduce treatment times.
Functional braces are usually used when a patient has significant issues with their teeth, such as an excessive overbite. They are typically for younger children and can be fixed or removable.
