Mount Agung, at an amazing height of 3142 metres above sea level, is the island's highest point. In addition to being spectacularly tall, the mountain is a dominating presence on the island due to its spiritual significance to the Balinese locals. They believe that Mount Agung is a portion of the mythical Mount Meru or the seat of the Gods. Needless to say, it is definitely one of the most popular attractions in the area among more adventurous travellers. It must be noted that the climb to the top of Mount Agung is not for the fainthearted. The hike up the mountain is quite tough and the height can feel daunting, especially to those who are not savvy trekkers. Be sure to hire a guide and to do a bit of research to prepare yourself for the experience.
