This is Port Stephens main playground; Nelson Bay is located to on the south shores and consists of some stunning beaches. Do check out Dutchman's Beach and Little Beach for loads of family fun. These are quite popular amongst families due to the beaches location within a sheltered beach. Besides, some of the most exciting water sports activities are available around these sandy shores. These coastal beaches are a mere five minute drive from the city centre. Nelson Bay Marina also called the 'Gateway to the Blue Water Paradise' is visited by a number of marine mammals that enjoy play in the warm waters; May to October is high season for these sightings which is why Nelson Bay accommodation such as Oaks Lure are ideal bases.
One Mile Beach the iconic attraction on Port Stephens postcards is loved for its excellent swimming and surfing potential. Easy to reach from a Port Stephens hotel this beach is ideal for beginners to learn surfing while kids can safely paddle in the shallow waters. Considered to be one of the area's most natural beaches One Mile is regularly patrolled; well set up the place boasts facilities of BBQ, showers and toilets.
Facing southeast this is the perfect family beach that hugs a curved section of the coast. The only time the beach is not recommended would be when southeast winds are blowing. Best of all there is a sand spit that offers a connection to the beaches private little island. This too is a patrolled beach where one can squander the day away indulging in activities such swimming, fishing, body boarding and surfing. Fingal Beach is well laid out offering facilities for picnics, BBQ's and riding your bicycles together with amenities of showers, toilettes and shops to explore. Do try the classy cafes along the shore for a very memorable meal while a short amble along the spit will take you to the large lighthouse; mind you head out at low tide after consulting the tidal chart.
Both these beaches are accessed through Shoal Bay. The area is just right for nature lovers to appreciate the natural beauty of Port Stephens and for spotting whales and dolphins that frequent the area. It's quite common to see wedding parties enjoying celebrations on this beach.
Box Beach is not as accessible as the others but it does deserve special mention for those of you eager to set off on an early morning surfing tour. The ideal beach to head to at first light, Box Beach is just right for a bout of body surfing and surfing.
