Waterfalls to see in Koh Phangan Island – The Best Cascades of Koh Phangan

The island of Koh Phangan, off the south eastern coast of Thailand, is one of the most popular destinations in the region. Among its many attractions are its beautiful waterfalls.

Wang Sai Waterfall

Located in Wan Haad, on the Northwestern region of Koh Phangan, is the beautiful Wang Sai Waterfall. This waterfall, although not the biggest or the most awe-inspiring waterfall in Koh Phangan, is one of the most popular owing to its beauty and amazing pools of water at the base of the waterfall. The cascade itself is rather beautiful, creating pools of cool water which are perfect to have a dip in. Surrounded by lush vegetation, having a bath at the cool and refreshing ponds at the base of Wang Sai Waterfall truly is amongst the top tropical and exotic experiences you can have in Koh Phangan. The experience is only enhanced by the beautiful bluish-greenish effect the water has, which a result of the limestone basins that are located the base of the cascade.

Than Sadet Waterfall

Ask any local what the best waterfall of Koh Phangan and the answer will almost always be Than Sadet Waterfall. Located just 6km from the Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas, the Than Sadet Waterfall is an expansive waterfall that cascades down a large rocky mountain slope that spans approximately 3km. This breathtaking waterfall is characterized by its three separate cascades that are a result of rocky protrusions that separate the stream of water that falls down the mountain, creating one of the most beautiful waterfalls you will ever come across. The Than Sadet Waterfall is actually of significance in Thai history as well, as King Rama IV visited the waterfall first in 1880, and was so moved by its beauty that he had a permanent inscription of his visit placed upon the rocky mountain. The three separate cascades create a pool of sparkling water at the base of the waterfall, making it indeed one of the most iconic sights of Koh Phangan. Avid fans of hiking can even take on the 3km hike along the cascade, and experience its beauty more closely.

Phaeng Waterfall

The Phaeng Waterfall is another one of the most famous waterfalls in Koh Phangan. Located centrally on the island, the Phaeng Waterfall is actually the site of two cascades; Phaeng Noi and Phaeng Yai (which is the bigger of the two). Reaching the waterfall is a bit of task as you will need to trek up to it, which also requires trekkers to get through a steep 250m pathway. But once there, it is fully worth it as the waterfall is simply breathtaking. For a great picture of the waterfall you can proceed to the Khao Ra peak, which has a great view point. All in all, the Phaeng Waterfall is an ideal place for a adventure excursion, and almost any luxury resort in Koh Phangan will have facilities to set up an excursion to it.

Paradise Waterfall

Paradise Waterfall is a cascade that is very popular amongst tourists given its ease of access. Located along the Thongsala – Chaloklum road, the Paradise Waterfall is best visited just after the rainy season. During this time the water gushing down is rather voluminous, creating an amazing pool of water which is great for having a dip in. It may not have the fame that some of the other waterfalls in Koh Phangah has, but that is certainly no reason not to visit the beautiful Paradise Waterfall and have a dip in its pools.

Than Prawet Waterfall

Like Than Sadet, the Than Prawet Waterfall is a waterfall that cascades a long distance; close to 2km. It is generally regarded as being the perfect waterfall for hikers and trekkers, and the trekking path that goes along the waterfall is one that is adventurous and offers many great viewing points. The waterfall can be accessed from the main road or the Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, and offers great viewing experience to lovers of nature.
