Colombo Bucketlist - Things to See and Experience in Colombo

Colombo is packed with rich culture and history, from temples and colonial buildings to beautiful beaches; you can find them all here. These are a few activities to cross off your Colombo bucketlist.

1

Old city hall

Tucked away in Fort, is Colombo's old town hall. Dating back to 1865, this old colonial building is mostly empty on the ground floor, but head up the creaking mahogany stairs and you'll find something more interesting. Upstairs, covered in dust inside the old council chambers is a complete replica of Colombo's first councilors in 1906. Placed around a large table, the figures are slightly creepy and yet fascinating all at once.

2

The Red Mosque

The streets of Pettah are tightly packed with old buildings, and mini markets spread out over the area, but hidden away on 2nd cross street is the Red Mosque. A historical landmark and, one of the oldest mosques in the city, the red and white brick patterned exterior of the mosques catches the eye of any passer-by. Rising six stories high, the buildings domes were designed to replicate the shape of a pomegranate fruit. Non-muslims are allowed in at certain times of the day, if they are dressed appropriately.

3

Galle Face Green

A broad grassy promenade, overlooking the Indian Ocean, Galle Face Green is a popular area for families and friends to meet and relax. On most day's you'll see everything from joggers, kite flyers, and even the odd pony or two trotting around the strip. Street food vendors, stand near the carts, serving up paper plates full of spicy snacks to hungry onlookers. Go there toward evening and the spectacular view of the sun setting over the ocean.

4

Beira Lake

Located in the heart of Colombo is Beira Lake - initially created by Portuguese colonialist as a form of defence, it has since been used for several different purposes. It's a great place to just chill and there's a lovely view for anyone to enjoy, especially at night when the walkways around the lake are lit up. There are plenty of things to do around here from paddling along the green waters in a swan-boat, visiting the meditation centre, or crossing the suspension bridge to lovers' island in the middle of the lake.

5

Gangaramaya Temple

Situated near the scenic Beira Lake, amid tall office buildings and luxury apartments in Colombo Sri Lanka, such as the Capitol TwinPeaks, is the Gangaramaya Temple. This amazing temple is filled with beautiful antiques and odd knick-knacks, most of which has been collected by the head monk. The temple complex contains a library, a museum, an antique car collection, and an arrangement of stately gifts presented by worshippers and well-wishers over the many years. In addition, the temple houses one elephant, primarily used for special occasions only.

6

Tuk tuk rides

Colombo's tuk tuk drivers have a reputation as speed demons, but that shouldn't put you off from experience a high speed drive through the city. Take in the sights of the city as the tuk tuk weaves its way through traffic and narrow streets to get you to your final stop. If you're lucky enough, you'll come across a chatty driver who can fill you in on hidden places to visit all over the city.
