21st Century 8th-Grade Learners

Lesson plans for 21st century learners.

The lesson helps students understand three different types of leadership styles: autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire. Students are divided into three groups, one for each of the leadership styles. Each group selects a leader, each leader is given specific instruction on how to instruct the rest of the team to complete the task. Students discuss the results.

Digital Citizenship

The lesson provides students with an overview on what it means to be a digital citizen. The lesson is collaborative . Students will begin by watching videos and engaging in discussion on what it means to be a digital citizen and how to be responsible when using digital technology. Students will engage in role playing activities, blog and share their knowledge, and reflect on what it means to be a digital citizen. The lesson includes enrichment opportunities for students to explore further concepts.

This lesson plan is designed to help students gain an understanding of effective communication skills. The activity is art based and allows students to express themselves relatively. Students will work together in pairs to practice effective communication skills. They must listen to their partners instructions in order to complete the activity. This is an exercise in effective communication with an artistic flare.

This unit is build around the concept of emotional intelligence. It is an extensive unit plan that include several different lessons. Each lesson guides students through intrapersonal skills, interpersonal skills, adaptability, stress management and general mood. The lesson includes surveys, quizzes, games and discussion questions to guide students toward understanding their own emotional intelligence and how it affects their everyday lives.

This lesson combines real world entrepreneurial skills with Language Arts standards for middle grades. Students will be able to identify various factors that influence consumer demand. Students will be able to understand the difference between fact and opinion. Students will analyze various media advertisements in order to understand the impact on the public at large, their own family and themselves.

This lesson is an art related lesson that requires students to take photograph as someone in the community that the student finds inspiring. The student will write a reflection about the person and why they were chosen. The project can be easily adapted to meet a variety of cafeteria and subject matter. It can also be easily adapted to other grade levels.

     Problem Solving Lesson Plan

Students will learn valuable problem solving skills while incorporating math, art and technology skills. Students will study structures and buildings. Students will be able to understand basic structural concepts and terminology. Students will be provided with a limited materials and must create a stable structure that one person can fit inside.

Students will engage in a variety of activities designed to help students understand their own style for working in a group. Students will first brainstorm what team work means and what it looks like. Next, students will find out their own personality style. Students will participate in a cooperative learning activity before creating a podcast as the culminating project.
