The ancient Uluwatu Temple set on the edge of a precipice, overlooking the Indian Ocean is one of Bali's most iconic landmarks. According to Balinese legend, the temple is one of six main temples which ward off evil spirits from Bali. Traditional architecture can be viewed at Uluwatu Temple, with several important pieces including a stone gateways, and ancient sculptures located in the courtyards. Aside from the beautiful temple and forests that surround it, it offers visitors a spectacular, panoramic view of the sun setting over the island. Even you can't make it to the top, just the view of the waves crashing against the cliff from below is unforgettable.
The central highlands are celebrated as the heart of Bali's cultural and artistic roots. The mountainous region of Ubud in particular, with its lush greenery, rolling hills, and rice terraces, have made it a haven away from the rushed pace of the coast. Ubud has several traditional markets and cultural villages where travellers can get a taste of Bali's rich cultural heritage. Whilst you are travelling through Ubud, don't forget to stop by the famed Monkey Forest Sanctuary. This dense forest is home to Bali's most mischievous resident - the long-tailed grey macaque. Shrouded by a canopy of giant nutmeg trees, the sanctuary houses over 600 wild macaques, who live in scattered groups around the forest. The macaques are not shy and can be seen swinging through the tree tops or even lounging in the middle of a trail. Apart from the monkeys, there are also several bird species that are commonly seen throughout the forest.
The waters around Bali's offer up some of the most celebrated snorkelling sites around the world. Just one of the islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago, Bali's marine diversity is amazing, with stunning coral reefs and tropical marine creatures in a multitude of vibrant colours. In addition, diving sites include drop-off walls and several shipwrecks.
The island's highest mountain, Mount Agung, rises a staggering 3000 metres above sea level, and holds deep spiritual significance to locals, as it is the location of the mother temple of Besakih - Bali's holiest temple. An active volcano, it occasionally spews smoke and ash from its deep crater. Mount Agung attracts adventure seekers who dream of scaling this sacred mountain and looking down over the island of the gods, from the home of the gods.
