5 Fun things to do in Beruwala -Top picks from a top coastal town

Beruwala is one of the most desired spots along the Southern coast of Sri Lanka, especially if you are looking for fun in the sun for the whole family.

1

Spend a day at the Brief Gardens

Brief Gardens is a place that you must visit if you are a lover of nature, architecture, or Sri Lanka. It is the family home of the celebrated Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and is located less than half an hour away from the coast. Brief Gardens is massive and features walkways, secluded gardens of differing themes, and buildings that foreshadow some of the greatest works to be done by the hands of Bawa. It is believed that he used the space at Brief Gardens as his experimental board, before executing them in large scale. With a ticket that is rather cheap, it is a great place to spend the day with the entire family.

2

Visit Barberyn Lighthouse

Barberyn Lighthouse, or simply Beruwala Lighthouse, is one of the four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka. Located off the Beruwala coast, it is built on Barberyn Island, thus giving it its name. the lighthouse is over a hundred feet tall and is made of white granite.
Completed in 1889, the Beruwala Lighthouse is under the operation of Imperial Lighthouse Service. It is very much in operation to date. Thus, the public cannot climb up to the gallery or scale the steps of this structure, no matter how tempting it looks.

3

Try your hand at water sports

As an island, there is one alluring feature of Sri Lanka. Beach hotels the likes of which include Cinnamon Bey Beruwala make the maximum use of this and have created a number of activities that play around the inviting waters of the Indian Ocean. You can go on a banana boat ride, take a swim, or even build a sand castle. However, remember to always ask advice of the locals first as the sea can be quite temperamental.

4

Visit a gems and jewellery shop

Unlike the ones you would find inside the Galle Fort or in Colombo, the gems and jewellery shops in Beruwala often come with their own mine and mode of mining. This means that by visiting one of these shops, not only will you be able to see some of the most precious stones in the country, but you might also be able to see the process of cutting and polishing the rough stones to make them as gorgeous and sparkling as you find them on the storefronts of most exclusive shops. This can be termed an insider's guide to the gem industry of Sri Lanka.

5

Scale Pahuru Kanda

Located on the banks of Pahuru River, Pahuru Kanda is a small mountain in the Southern part of Sri Lanka that is favoured by hikers and the villagers. There is a temple at the top of the mountain, which can be reached in about an hour. however, it might take you much longer to scale the 600 odd steps as the scenery along the way is truly mesmerising. In addition to the wild flora and fauna that run free, the view as you reach higher altitudes are some rare shots of the ocean and the town of Beruwala. It is not a tough climb and is definitely an activity that the whole family can enjoy.
