Artipelag

In 2012, Björn and Lillemor Jakobson – the couple behind BabyBjörn – built an art gallery and restaurant that’s just a 30-minute drive from Stockholm. It draws a young, artsy crowd and is perfect for people who don’t have a lot of time to explore. From the angular building that fades into its wooded surroundings to exhibitions with names like Earth Matters, it lives up to its motto of art meets nature.

Sandhamn

Sandhamn

One of my favourite beaches is also the farthest out. It takes about two hours to get there, but the trip is beautiful. The island has a bit of everything: little red cottages, hotels, restaurants and the social life of a small community. The water is cold – 17–19°C, probably – but everyone goes swimming. Well, except me – I’m not much of a cold-water person.

Grinda Wärdshus

Grinda Wärdshus

This is a very charming B&B on a small island in the middle part of the archipelago. I love the old-fashioned beds, but you can also come for a laid-back lunch. I get the nettle soup, a popular Swedish dish, and the Arctic char. Or you can sit on the front porch and enjoy the breeze with a Grinda Golden Ale.

EdblaD

EdblaD

Located in the Grisslehamn harbour, on Väddö island in the outer archipelago where our summer house is, Edblad is run by a couple from a neighbouring island. It’s a breezy space with whitewashed floors, and it’s great for picking up whatever item of clothing, jewellery or home wares you may have forgotten in the city – I recently got a cozy wool sweater there for cool evenings by the sea.

Bockholmen

Bockholmen

Located a mere 5 minutes from the city, Bockholmen is an island of tranquillity. The charming turn-of-the-century villa is the only building on the island and is a popular foodie-destination. The veranda offers respite during the summer months and crackling fires set the tone during the winter.
