Trials and split shifts

Trials and split shifts

I started work at a local restaurant, and worked three hours as a 'trial shift' but nobody told me about pay rates. Then I went back to work today for 4 hours during the day, then been they asked me to work another three hours in the evening - a 'split shift'. Do I have to work a split shift and can I get paid for my trial as well?

A You should’ve been paid for the all the shifts you worked, even though you weren’t yet accepted as an employee. With regard to an allowance for working a split shift you will need to check your award. Try calling the Unions Australia helpline on 1300 486 466

Pay for set up time?

Pay for set up time?

I work at a hot bread shop as a casual. We're often expected to have everything set up for work at times 30mins before shift, I am noticing on my payslips that we're not getting paid for this - only from the rostered start time. Is this legal?

A If you actually start half an hour before you rostered start time you should be paid for it. If this is happening to a few people at your work you can act as a group to get your employer to fix this. For more information or help call Unions Australia on 1300 486 466
