1

Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green located close to many popular Colombo hotels, boasts of large open spaces bordering the shimmering waters of the Indian Ocean. The large open spaces of Galle Face Green and the gusts of wind sweeping in from the sea create the most ideal condition for flying kites. By early evening, you will notice plenty of road side food stalls popping up on the paved pathway. Stop by and try the local favourite 'isso wade', which consists of a deep fried dhal mixture in a disc shape and topped with prawns. If you're looking for something a bit more fancier to dine with your family in the area, there are a number of restaurants around, especially those in hotels such as Cinnamon Grand Colombo.

2

Gangaramaya Temple

No trip to Colombo is ever complete without visiting a temple. The Gangaramaya Temple located in the heart of the city is considered to be one of the more famous and sacred places of worship in Colombo. The temple is known to be about 120 years old and is a major tourist attraction, especially during the festival season. The temple is mostly celebrated for its architecture and a variety of statues from China, Thailand, Burma and Sri Lanka. If you walk a little away from the main premises of the temple, and head towards the Beira Lake, you'll come across the Seema Malaka which is an assembly hall for monks and worshippers.

3

Leisure World

A little bit off the main city, but definitely worth the travel, head over to Leisure World for some fun! This theme park is complete with dry games and water slides, and you can choose to do all of it! Spend your entire day here with your family, and maybe pack a picnic, and prepare to have loads of fun!

4

Colombo National Museum

Head over to the National Museum to learn about Sri Lanka's rich and diverse history. As you enter the main museum, you'll first see the massive king's throne along with various robes and attire worn by the members of the Royal family. The museum located in Colombo 7 holds artefacts and treasures from over 2500 years ago, and was opened in 1877. The Natural History Museum, part of the main museum is an equally fascinating section and is a definite must visit.

5

The beach

Although it's not exactly a place, you must make it a point to head to the golden shores of Sri Lanka during your trip to the island. With warm waters kissing the shores, it's the perfect day for you and your family. Spend your day under the cool shade of a beachside restaurant or take in the sun rays as you run and frolic in the beach. In Colombo, one of the more popular beaches for swimming and relaxing in is the Mount Lavinia Beach. However, do take precaution when swimming, as currents can tend to get a bit strong, especially during monsoon season.
