The initial fort was built even before the Portuguese arrived in the 1500s and was owned by many entities during its existence. As a result it contains an immense load of heritage. A local hero, Prince Akbar made the fortress his base camp during his efforts to combat Portuguese rule. The fort that currently stands was constructed in 1717 and its strategic placement and construction gives it views of every possible direction. The fort was also used as a filming location for many notable Bollywood movies such as 'Dil Chahta Hai', cementing it as a prominent tourist hotspot.
