Popular Things to do on a Beach Trip to Negombo – Coastal Adventures in Sri Lanka

The West Coast city of Negombo has become one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka offering plenty of fun in the sun, sand & surf. Here are some of the best things to do here.

1

Lazing on The Shore

Sun kissed golden shores are one of the highlights in Negombo. The beach area here is perfect for spending lazy days in the sun, working on that perfect tan as you enjoy a snooze on the sand, read your favourite book or just watch the world go slowly by. There are plenty of beach resorts in Sri Lanka in and around this coastal strip so finding accommodation is not a problem. Best of all, the west coast of the island is also one of the best spots to take in magical sunsets and come evening, the Negombo beach is the ideal place to enjoy this spectacular natural "show" as the sun dips below the horizon.

2

Water Sports

Those in search of more action packed beachside activities in Negombo can look to take part in the number of water sports on offer. While snorkelling is not big here, you can try it out and certain spots do offer glimpses of an enthralling world beneath the waves. For more thrilling fun one can try such water sports as jet skiing and kayaking, while taking a banana boat ride be it at sea or in the lagoon, is a great way to get that adrenaline pumping. Negombo is also a popular place to enjoy kite-surfing, especially between the months of January and March when the wind conditions are ideal.

3

Diving

For more in depth exploration of the ocean, Negombo provides an ideal base from which to head out on diving excursions. You do find some fascinating dive sites approximately five to eight kilometres from the shore, while those with more experience can head to another reef roughly 22 kms away. On your diving adventures you have a chance to see a variety of corals as well as fish species such as powder blue sturgeon, oriental sweet lips, barracudas and angel fish and if you're lucky, you may spot a turtle or two as well. Another highlight for divers would be the chance to explore shipwrecks within easy reach of Negombo's coastline.

4

Heading on a Boat Safari

For something different you could plan to take a boat safari on the Dutch Canal. This colonial landmark offers a captivating boat safari that lets you witness the traditional lifestyle of communities who have made their homes along the canal banks. Boat tours can be found independently or by way of accommodation providers like Amagi Hotels and Resorts and let you spot local wildlife too including a variety of bird species.

5

Visiting the Negombo Fish Market

Providing a fascinating insight into a more traditional way of life, the Negombo Fish Market is a lively market place that is worth visiting. Those heading here early can see fishermen returning from sea, before sorting out their catch and taking them for auction at the market.
