Must Visit Beaches in Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka's Best Beaches

Given that Sri Lanka is a lush tropical island, there are many recognised beaches to explore, with some even having topped lists on the Discovery Channel.

1

Negombo beach

This is the most conveniently located beach since it is extremely close to the airport as well as being just about an hour's journey from the capital of Colombo. Considering the beach's very lucrative location, there are many luxury resorts to choose from as well as quite a few budget hotels in Sri Lanka such as the Hotel J Negombo. This is one of Sri Lanka's most bustling and lively stretches of beach since on any given day you will find anything from live-bands, various shops, and a delightful selection of restaurants to choose from. This is definitely one of the most convenient choices of sandy retreats.

2

Bentota beach

One of the most easy to reach coastal areas is Bentota, and the town's beach is popular in Sri Lanka for its cleanliness. The town is situated only sixty-five kilometres away from Colombo, making it easily accessible within an hour's drive. From November through to April, the waters are very calm, making it an ideal destination for a family holiday. One can also enjoy snorkelling as well as scuba diving since there's quite a bit to see beneath the waters of Bentota.

3

Tangalle beach

Situated towards the south of Sri Lanka, the beaches of Tangalle are visually appealing and ideal for those who prefer their beach-bound retreats to be peaceful and somewhat isolated. Lush tropical trees and turquoise water separated by powdery sands are what await you on a visit to Tangalle. If you're lucky you might even see Elephants bathing in certain sections of the beach. You will not face any dangers since the public and private areas of beach are quite protected. Since this beach is located in the Hambantota district, you can easily access it by the Southern Expressway.

4

Kalpitiya beach

Located north of Colombo in the Puttalam area is Kalpitiya. If you're interesting in whale watching, Kalpitiya is one of the best places. Head out to the sea sometime early, around seven in the morning, and you will easily discover majestic sea-creatures such as whales and dolphins. The dolphins in particular have gotten quite used to people and have the potential to do anything from displaying acrobatics to even approaching the boat. If you are lucky, you might even witness a Sperm Whale as Kalpitiya is one of the places in Sri Lanka where you can spot these incredible creatures. Even the rare breed of dolphin known as the humpback has been commonly spotted in Kalpitiya waters.

5

Nilaweli beach

Easily one of the most romantic beaches Sri Lanka has to offer where waves of turquoise water meet sun-kissed sands. To reach this incredible beach you will have to travel all the way to the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, it definitely won't be a journey you will regret. A short ride from Nilaweli beach will take you to Pidgeon Island; a beautiful yet tiny landmass partly encircled by a coral reef. If you venture a little further, you might even see a Blue Whale.
