Top 05 Beaches in Sri Lanka -The Best of the Best

Sri Lanka, an island extraordinaire. This little slice of paradise is renowned for its beautiful beaches so it's hard to pick the top 5, but pick we must so here they are!

Arugam Bay

A.k.a Surfer's Paradise. Tucked away on the eastern shores of the island, Arugam Bay is world renowned for its amazing surf breaks. During the peak season, which is from April until September, the beach becomes filled with backpackers and surfers from across the globe. There are also surfing contests during this time.

Mirissa

The number one destination for whale watching on the island. Located in the south, this little beach resort town becomes abuzz with tourists during peak season which is from October to the mid of April. So, if you're planning a vacation here, search for inbound tour operators in Sri Lanka who organizes whale watching excursions. Places like Jetwing Travels have made special packages so that everything from the boat to the refreshments and the accommodation is taken care of. Once you embark on a whale watching tour, you will get the opportunity to spot the majestic blue whales as their migration path is just off Dondra Point which is close to Mirissa. In addition to the big blues, you will also see sperm whales as well as spinner dolphins, and if you're really lucky, killer whales too!

Hikkaduwa

Snorkelling heaven. The Hikkaduwa Coral Gardens is one of the three marine national parks in the country. Due to its rich biodiversity, the gardens were declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1979. In addition to species such as the cabbage, staghorn, brain, table, elkhorn and star corals; you will also get to meet colourful schools of fish and sea turtles as you snorkel along.

Beruwala

A quaint, sleepy beach, Beruwala is located on the west coast of the island and a trip here from Colombo would take about 1 hour. Other than just lazing about the beach and getting a nice tan, you can snorkel at the Barberyn Reef. Or better yet visit the ancient lighthouse on Barberyn Island.

Pasikudah

With pristine white sands and turquoise blue waters, Pasikudah Beach on the east coast is the perfect embodiment of a beach. The waters here are so shallow that you can wade in it for as far back as 50 metres. The beach is also pretty famous as a snorkelling destination.
