More often than not, movie soundtracks can be the thin line between a movie killing it at the box office or turning out boring. Here's a list of some of the best movie soundtracks of 2016 in no particular order.
A suprisingly fresh take on superhero movies, Deadpool made a permanent place in everyone's hearts with the new spin on the genre. With some classic hits by Salt-N-Pepa, DMX, and George Michael - all of which are included on the soundtrack as well, the movie is a 2016 favourite.

Every single song on this soundtrack deserves to be on your favourite mixtape. Some, like “City of Stars,” are fragile beauties, while most channel the Old Hollywood glamour and bombast that the film does.

Like any other Disney movie, Moana has a very heartwarming, catchy collection of instrumental scores, original songs and modern covers. From rising actress Auli’i Cravalho’s warm, emotive vocal delivery on “How Far I’ll Go,” to Alessia Cara’s cool, radio-friendly alt-pop cover, to the sweeping, epic Polynesian anthem “We Know the Way,” there’s something for all Disney lovers to enjoy.

Me Before You didn't just earn rave reviews for the drama, the indie scores by X Ambassadors, The 1975, and Jessie Ware gained a lot of popularity too. Ed Sheeran's "Photograph" rounds out the track list in the story about love and second chances.

Johannsson’s score is an ambient, electronic soundscape which suits the mood and the theme of the film perfectly. It’s a film about verbal communication between species, and the Icelandic composer hints at linguistics with passages formed of sampled voices that are almost impossible to decipher.

Common consensus has this latest comic-book mash-up as overblown and humourless, but in conjunction with Dutch producer and DJ Junkie XL, Hans Zimmer “retired” from the superhero genre in fine style, with church bells, thundering percussion, metallic clanking, heavenly choirs and, yes, quiet reflective interludes before each storm.

Hailee Steinfeld starred in this coming-of-age drama which had a soundtrack including Two Door Cinema CLub, Santigold, Cloves and Phantogram fit for a perfect evening unwinding.

Bad Mom's theme 'Party like a mom' came with a soundtrack filled with dance hits like Demi Lovato's "Confident" and DNCE's "Cake By the Ocean." Other artists appearing include Janelle Monae, Walk the Moon, and Icona Pop.

Nerve's soundtrack is a mix of a lot of indie, new wave with some EDM adding a lot of punctuation to the mood of the movie.
