It is widely considered that Nizwa is the origin of Islam in Oman, and is one of the oldest cities in Oman. It was even once the capital, and therefore is a bustling centre of trade, as well as being a cultural attraction. When it comes to Oman sightseeing this is definitely one of the best places to start. There's also a lot of accommodation with luxury hotels such as Alila Jabal Akhdar. Nizwa's fort is the biggest in the entire Arabian Peninsula, and is an essential visit. The fort was built sometime in the 12th century, and one can climb all the way to the top using a spiral staircase. The Jebel Akhdar souq is also a great place to explore Middle-Eastern culture and check out various items ranging from silver jewellery, to leather goods and even fresh food.
