The "Stand Up" episode of Redfern Now demonstrated power through various characters. This list will discuss the 5 characters that explored the concept of power in this episode.
Joel is the main character of this episode of Redfern Now, in this episode Joel is confused if he should sing the national anthem as his dad, who is a big influence to him, told him to not sing the national anthem as in his opinion he thinks that an aboriginal shouldn't sing the national anthem. A scene in this episode of Redfern Now, Joel is walking into Mr Parish's class, and when Joel walks into the class the lights get brighter behind him giving the scene a sense of happiness. In this episode Joel had the power to send a message and influence the other students that didn't want to sing the national anthem as he represented the aboriginal people when mr Moore didn't as he really did anything about it, and that Joel was expelled by Mrs Macann due to him not following Mrs Macann's rules. Joel's use of power influenced students who did not find the point in singing the nation anthem, mainly Chloe, and Mr Parish, as this later on in the episode changed Mrs Macann's mind on why she expelled Joel as the students that didn't want to listen or follow Mrs Macann's rules, which made her feel powerless and resolved her into threatening the students.
Joel's mother, Nic, and father, Eddie, got the media involved in this episode as they wanted to get the schools attention as well as the schools Principal Mrs Macann's attention. They got the media involved as they wanted to use the newspaper so they could tell the people who read the paper that their son was expelled from the school as he did not sing the national anthem. In one scene the principal walks Joel out of school since he was expelled at the time, the camera man from the news paper takes a picture of Mrs Macann and the security guard kicking Joel out of the school, the camera has close-ups of Joel and Mrs Macann when the camera man takes the picture. The media's use of power got the schools attention so that they would be forced to accept Joel back into the school and to make the national anthem optional to sing.
In this episode of Redfern Now, Mrs Macann was a big part of this episode as she has a lot of power over people as she is the principal of Joel's school. Mrs Macann becomes very strict and uses her power by trying to make Joel sing the national anthem, which Mrs Macann abused her power by expelling Joel from the school, Mrs Macann also threatened kids who followed in Joel's footsteps by not singing the national anthem and threatened them by saying that she would abuse her power of being principle and expel them all as Mrs Macann was loosig her power against them as these students did not listen to her making her powerless and resulting to threatening the students. In a scene Mrs Macann was standing on a higher part of the gym with lights focussing on her making her look more powerful then all the other students in the gym that were singing the national anthem. Mrs Macann enforces her power by using strict rules and later expelling students such as Joel, specifically for not singing the national anthem
In this episode Joel's mother, Nic, used power by telling Joel what to do like stop talking to Chloe or going back to school even though at the time he was expelled, Nic also had power over Joel's father, Eddie, as when Joel got expelled and Eddie was the main influence, Nic made him realise that Joel doesn't need to follow specific aboriginal rules. In this scene Nic was talking to Eddie about how important Joel's education is and this scene uses some techniques to make Nic look more powerful than Eddie as in the scene the camera angle was facing more lower towards Eddie and then switched to more of a close up or high angle towards Nic making it look like that she has more power over Eddie. Nic wanted Eddie to do something about Joel being expelled, which then lead to both Nic and Eddie sending Joel back to school even when he was expelled from the school, which later made more people including Chloe more rebellious about singing the national anthem due to what happened to Joel. Nic used her power by making Eddie understand that they want their son to have a good education and a good future instead of following specific rules just because Joel is an aboriginal.
Eddie had power in this episode of Redfern Now as he is a big influence to Joel as he was making Joel not sing the national anthem at school, which got him in trouble and escalated to Joel being expelled from his school. He also had the power to get the media involved in this situation and the power to send Joel back to school even though he was expelled at the time. In one scene both Eddie and Joel are talking about the national anthem and about if Joel got into any trouble or not, this scene used close ups on both Eddie and Joel's faces making it seem like more of a serious scene. Eddies use of power had an impact in this episode as he was a big influence to Joel and his decision in singing the national anthem.
