Having braces fitted is quite straightforward but during the time you are wearing them you need to make sure they are cared for properly. Here are the best things you can do to ensure those braces stay in perfect condition, and by doing so, encourage perfect teeth too.
This may sound silly but things are no longer the same. You now have an addition to your mouth, and regardless of whether it is made of porcelain or metal it will mean you need to make some concessions to your daily routine.
You need to ensure your braces, and the teeth underneath them are clean. The best way to make sure of this is to keep to your normal dental routine but to add in mouth cleans between meals and snacks, either by rinsing your mouth with water or brushing and flossing.
Some foods just aren’t helpful when you are wearing braces. Anything chewy or sticky for example, can cause damage and just as importantly, can be difficult to remove. This can then lead to the build- up of plaque, or even decay. Foods of a healthier nature and consistency are best, and if you are wishing to eat anything hard, that could break or damage your braces, remember it’s useful to cut up those types of foods into smaller than usual pieces.
Whilst your brace is doing a great job of correcting any oral issues, having it does make other less beneficial situations more possible. Make sure your mouth is clean by drinking plenty of water and by avoiding fizzy drinks and fruit juices wherever you can. That way you won’t allow your mouth to remain acidic for long, which is good for your teeth as well as your brace.
The person who fits your brace will have a wealth of experience about brace care. They will have encountered all sorts of situations and assisted many people who have damaged or neglected their braces. There is nothing they haven’t seen before. This means they know what works best. Make sure you ask your orthodontist if there is anything you are concerned about and get the full facts. Caring for your brace is not hard if you know what to expect and what to do.
