In light of the recent executive order signed by the U.S. president banning travel to the U.S. by residents of seven predominantly Muslim countries, the subject of refugee vetting and immigration has been one of the hottest topics since the order was signed Friday, January 27 - and subsequently overturned by a U.S. District Court judge the following Friday.
No matter which side of that argument you fall, we can all agree that music, which itself is universal, has a compelling way of telling the story, whether it be about the plight of immigrants - even illegal ones - or the story of a country's legacy as a huge melting pot built by immigrants.

Barbadian singer and superstar Rihanna kicks off this immigration countdown with a 2015 song that went far deeper lyrically than her hits catalog normally does. Maybe that's why it's one of the least successful chart hits in her repertoire that includes nearly 30 top-tens, fourteen of which reached #1 (as of this writing). "American Oxygen," which is a somewhat sarcastic nod to the pursuit of the American Dream, peaked at a paultry #78 on the Billboard Hot 100.
